When an IUD Migrates to Other Parts of the Body
Intrauterine devices are used by thousands of women throughout the United States. These IUDs prevent pregnancy while being easy to maintain and not requiring any particular action from a woman. She does need to get regular checkups from her doctor and must be sure she can feel the string attached to the device by feeling for it every month. However, IUDs do not always stay where they are supposed to. When they migrate to other areas of the body, serious harm can be done.

Both types of IUD can move around within the uterus or even move outside of it. The two types are the hormonal IUD (Mirena made by Bayer) and the copper IUD (ParaGard). Both devices are shaped as a “T” with the outer arms holding the birth control device in place. One releases a synthetic hormone and the other releases copper, a basic poison for sperm. The general result of these substances released is to make an inhospitable environment for the growth of a fertilized egg.
The Risk of IUD Migration
Unfortunately, IUDs can move from their position within the uterus. They may be inserted incorrectly but can also move even years after insertion. This migration is dangerous because the device can cause quite a few adverse physical symptoms. An IUD can puncture the uterine wall and can also move outside the uterus and end up in other areas in the abdomen. Perforation of organs is a major concern.

When a healthcare provider inserts the intrauterine device incorrectly, it can puncture the cervix tissues or the lining of the uterus. When it moves to other areas of the body, it can perforate the bowel or bladder. The intestines can be cut through. When the intestines are damaged, infection can result, such as sepsis which is a life-threatening condition.
Symptoms that an IUD has migrated may be:
• Severe pain in the lower abdomen
• Abscesses
• Intestinal obstruction
The complications after a device migrates can be horrific. One woman became pregnant only to discover her IUD was in her abdomen. Although it was removed safely, the birth of her child came preterm and she had damage to her organs.

Embedment of an IUD
IUDs can become embedded in tissues and cause infection and serious complications. It can embed in the uterine wall, the abdominal cavity or the cervix. One woman had her intrauterine device lodged in a fat-storing organ outside of her stomach. She had had her uterus perforated, with bleeding and adhesions formed. The final outcome was a full hysterectomy. Of course, this isn’t the result for every woman where the IUD embeds in other tissues, but it is something to consider when opting for IUDs as a method of birth control.
Sepsis Infection and the Dangers
The danger of contracting sepsis is higher when an IUD migrates. This infection quickly spreads throughout the body and becomes system-wide. It can be fatal as the organs begin to shut down as they are affected by the infection.
