History of the IUD
The IUD is one of the most highly effective forms of birth control on the market today. It is more than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, can last 5-10 years and is completely and easily reversible. Today's IUDs are devices over 80 years in the making.

Early IUDs
Women in history have used a variety of devices, inserted into the uterus, to act as a contraceptive device. A more formal IUD was developed by a German doctor, Dr. Ernst Grafenberg around 1929. The original IUD developed by Dr. Grafenberg was circular shaped and made of silk threads wrapped in a wire made of fine silver. He later discovered that using copper in the device increased its effectiveness.

In the 1950's a plastic IUD was introduced. They were not initially successful as they were quite large. One of the first IUDs to be considered safe was developed by Dr. Jack Lippes, an American gynecologist. It consisted of a double loop with a thread extension.
Challenges in Development
During the 1960's and 1970's the United States drug companies began to work on IUD development. Their versions of the contraceptive device were not well tested. They caused severe pain and infections in a great number of women. Other effects reported were miscarriages, hysterectomies, birth defects and even death. This led to an extensive number of lawsuits, nearly ending IUD manufacturing and use completely in the United States.

The 1970's was also the time China was looking for ways to effectively enforce its one-child policy. Chinese doctors developed a stainless steel IUD that later was banned due to a 10 percent failure rate.
Safer IUDs
The united States continued to work on developing a safe and highly effective IUD. The ParaGard IUD was introduced in the United States in 1988. It consisted of a small plastic T with copper wrapped around parts of it. Very little has changed with the copper IUD since that time. A hormonal IUD, called Mirena, was introduced in 1990. It has the same plastic T but instead of copper it contains the hormone progestin.

Due to the serious damage and side effects caused by the devices developed in the 1960's and 1970's, the IUD still has a bit of a bad reputation. Many women are unaware of the improvements made to the modern IUD. Today's IUDs are considered to be highly effective and extremely safe if used properly and under the supervision of a physician.
