Is there a Connection between Infertility and IUD Usage?
IUDs have been used for close to 50 years in the United States and all over the world. Sexually Transmitted Diseases and IUDS
IUDs are effective at preventing pregnancies at an effectiveness of above 99%, but do not prevent against sexually transmitted diseases.  There are many studies that show that women who use contraceptives, whether in pill form or IUD, have been found to contract a sexually transmitted disease more often than a woman who does not use contraceptives, not including condoms or other such uses. It is important to routinely have an STD test and use condoms during sexual intercourse.  Many times people attribute infertility to an IUD when in actuality they have contracted a sexually transmitted disease.  Sexually transmitted diseases can increase the chance of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease which can lead to infertility.

One thing that should be mentioned is that ever since the 1970s and the misconceptions of IUDs and infertility, most medical schools have left the insertion and removal of IUDs out of medical lessons, leaving that to be taught while the students are in rotation.  This creates an uncomfortable situation with the students once they become doctors because they do not know a lot about that form of contraceptive. Unfortunately, this discomfort allows past unsubstantiated views to rule their future recommendations.
