What are the Different Types of IUDs?

IUDs are devices that are implanted in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. The basic premise of an IUD is the same regardless of the type. It is a T-shaped device that releases a chemical into the body. The chemical triggers a reaction that prevents pregnancy.

Hormonal IUD

There are two types of IUDs. They differ based on the material from which they are made and the chemical that is released. The first type is made from plastic. It releases the hormone progestin from the vertical portion of the device. This causes cervical mucus to thicken which creates a barrier to the sperm. It also creates an inhospitable environment in the uterus, so an egg is unlikely to attach to the lining. This type of IUD is inserted for up to five years of use.

Copper IUD

The second type of IUD contains copper. It is also made from plastic, but it is covered with a copper wire around the base. This releases copper into the uterus, which creates an inflammatory reaction. This inflammation attracts white blood cells, which are toxic to sperm. This type of IUD is inserted for up to a decade of use.

Both types of IUDs must be inserted by a doctor. This is done during a pelvic exam and is relatively painless. There may be some cramping following the procedure. A string hangs out of the uterus and is used to ensure the device is still in place. Women with IUDs must check this string periodically to ensure the IUD has not been expelled into the vagina. If this occurs, it renders the IUD useless for preventing pregnancy.

The fact that an IUD only requires minimal maintenance is what makes it appealing to so many women. Once in place, it can prevent pregnancy for years without having to take a pill or conduct any procedures prior to intercourse. If a woman is sure she does not want children in the near future, an IUD is a very effective method of birth control.

Unfortunately, it is not without side effects. Some women report a negative reaction to the progestin IUD. Much of this is due to the hormonal fluctuation it creates within the body. The device works, but it can create havoc on someone whose body is sensitive to the release of progestin. If you are considering an IUD, but you are concerned about possible side effects, speak with your doctor about your concerns.
