Are IUDs Safe?
An intrauterine device (IUD) is a method of semi-permanent birth control. There are two types of IUDs and both are considered extremely effective for preventing pregnancy. In addition to use as birth control, some types of IUDs are used to improve symptoms associated with menstrual bleeding.
IUDs are an internal device. Women must visit a doctor for the insertion process, which usually takes only a few minutes. Hormonal IUDs are made from plastic and release progestin into the system through the uterus. This damages or kills sperm, and it also thickens the lining of the uterus, making it nearly impossible for a fertilized egg to attach. Copper IUDs are inserted into the uterus in the same manner as the plastic variety, but instead of progestin, copper is released. Copper causes the uterus and fallopian tubes to release a fluid that blends with the copper and creates a toxic environment for sperm.

Risks of IUDs
This is typically considered a safe method of birth control, but there are some risks and instances in which problems occur. The most common is an increase in menstrual bleeding. Hormonal IUDs are used to decrease menstrual bleeding, but some women find the copper variety causes bleeding to increase. There may also be problems with spotting between periods. Cramping can also worsen.
Perforation occasionally occurs with an IUD. This typically happens during insertion. If you are concerned about perforation during the insertion procedure, speak with your doctor. It is important to note it is very rare, but it is perfectly normal to be concerned. Ask your doctor how much experience she has inserting the device and whether there have been any previous problems.

Expulsion is another rare occurrence, though it does happen more frequently than perforation. Sometimes a woman’s body rejects the IUD and expels it from the uterus into the vagina. This typically occurs within the first few months after insertion and is more common for women who have never been pregnant or who recently gave birth. Expulsion makes the IUD ineffective.

Potential Side Effects
The hormones released by some IUDs can trigger ovarian cyst growth. These are benign and usually dissolve over time. Hormonal IUDs can also trigger symptoms related to hormone imbalance, such as mood swings, headaches, breast tenderness, and acne. These usually decrease as the body adjusts to the IUD.
In addition to the rare risks and side effects associated with IUDs, there are also things an IUD cannot do. It does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases, so some users will still need to use additional protection.
