Treatment of Abscesses
An abscess is a tender and usually swollen and red lump on a solid tissue of the body. It can be on the surface of the skin, below the surface or on tissues deep inside the body. An infection has been encapsulated and can be dangerous as defensive body cells can no longer reach it to fight the infection. An abscess must be treated to prevent further complications.

Seeking Medical Care for an Abscess
Anyone should seek treatment when there is a sore that is larger than a half-inch across on your skin. If it is getting bigger and more painful, this makes it more imperative to seek medical assistance. Other indications that a person should call his or her doctor are:
• A sore near groin or rectal area
• A temperature of 101.5°F or higher
• A red streak running away from the sore area
A person who thinks they have an abscess should go to an emergency room if his temperature runs 102°F or higher, particularly if the person has a chronic illness, is getting chemotherapy or takes steroids. If lymph nodes nearby are swollen or tender, this is another indication of the need for emergency treatment.

Different Treatments for Abscesses
Many people, when they have a boil (an abscess on the surface of the skin), will use Epsom salt paste to treat it. This application will draw the infection to the top so it can rupture and leak out of the sore. The body will then repair itself and the infected cavity. The best time to use this is at night with a sterile dressing over it.
Another solution is just a warm compress applied to the area for approximately 30 minutes for 4 times a day. This is good when the abscess is less than a half-inch across. Never stick the abscess with a needle or sharp instrument because this can cause the infection to spread.
When medical care is obtained, the doctor will make an incision and drain the abscess. He may be able to give a local anesthesia so there is no pain with the procedure. All the pus and other debris inside the abscess will be drained out. If a foreign object in the body was the cause of the abscess, the object will, of course, have to be removed. For internal abscesses, such as those on the fallopian tubes or ovaries as complications with IUDs, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics intravenously, but if this doesn’t work, he will have to go in and drain it surgically.

Antibiotics will most likely be prescribed for anyone with a drained abscess. Then some doctors will insert packing into the drained cavity to minimize the bleeding and to allow it to stay open and heal. This is not always done as it has been controversial as to the benefits of this to fast healing.
What a Doctor Will Want to Know
When visiting a doctor regarding a possible abscess procedure, the doctor will require a medical history and ask about the abscess itself. He will want to know how long it has been there, if there was an injury to the area, what medicines the patient is taking and if there are any allergies.
