How Have IUDs Changed Over the Years?
Do you have an IUD or want to get one? You might be wondering how IUDs have changed over the years since they were first introduced. Did you know that IUDs have been used for nearly 100 years? It has come a long way since it was first created both in form and in materials used.

The first plastic IUD was used in 1958 and it was an odd shape. This shape caused many women discomfort as well as their partners during sex since it had a hard plastic tail that hung out of the cervix. Let’s talk about how these have changed over the years.
Where it Began and Where it is Now
As we mentioned before, the IUD when it was first used was too large for many women and caused them discomfort. The goal for the IUD was to be a birth control that women could use and forget about. In 1968, a plastic T-shaped device was introduced and they were smaller without decreasing the effectiveness.

Copper was added to the device since it was found that it can actually improve the effectiveness of the IUD. Since the T-shape was more similar to the uterus, it had less problems with expulsion or pushing out of the uterus. There was one type called the Dalkon Shield which had a poor design and caused some women to have septic abortions. Some of whom actually passed away!
There is also an IUD that is used that releases a synthetic hormone in the body that can increase the effectiveness as well. The hormones in this type of IUD are released slowly in the body over the course of 3 or 5 years. In 2013, a lower dose 3 year Mirena was introduced to offer users a lower dose of hormones.

Today, there are several types of IUDs, but the most common are the ParaGard which uses copper and the Mirena which includes hormones. Both are extremely effective in preventing pregnancy when they are used correctly.
Future of the IUD
IUDs have certainly gained popularity over the past few years. Women desire to have something that is low maintenance as well as effective. IUDs will change and evolve over the years as research provides new information. How much they will change is uncertain. For now, the current forms are available from your physician and can be inserted in the office.
