Instruments and Methods Used in Laparoscopy

The instruments used in doing laparoscopy are small and relatively unobtrusive. One that is used is called a laparoscope, a thin tube which is lighted. It contains a lens or digital system which projects the images of the internal organs on a screen so the surgeon can view the pelvic cavity and organs. Another instrument the surgeon may use is a small tubular-shaped item that is inserted into the vagina to move the uterus so a better view is obtained. A needle called the Veress needle may also be used to inflate the abdomen with gas (making it easier to access the organs).
