Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are little sacs filled with fluid, organic matter and air. They are attached to and within the ovary, covered by a membrane. These types of cysts are common, especially during the childbearing years of a woman. The ovaries are the part of the reproductive system which stores and releases eggs that, once fertilized, can develop into a fetus and finally a baby.

Types of Ovarian Cysts
There are a number of different ovarian cysts, but the most common one is called a functional cyst. This is formed by a follicle of the ovary where an egg forms. Sometimes when the egg is released, the follicle does not function as it should and ends up turning into a cyst. Other cysts come from cells that produce human eggs, from tissue of the ovary itself or from uterine cells that attach and grow outside of the uterus.

Many women who have an ovarian cyst do not experience any symptoms at all – and many cysts go away on their own. However, some may find minimal to very uncomfortable symptoms. Some of the symptoms that may appear are:
• Irregularity of menstrual periods
• Abnormal bleeding from vagina
• Tenderness of the breasts
• Fullness or bloating in abdomen
• Urination difficulties
• Problems with bowel movements
• Aching in lower abdomen or lower back
• Sharp pain in lower abdomen – constant or sporadic
• Nausea
• Headaches
• Loss of appetite
• Pain during intercourse
A woman may also get signs of hormonal irregularities such as weight gain, fatigue, increased levels of hair growth on face or body, or trouble conceiving a baby (infertility).
When a woman has a large cyst on her ovary, it can press on the bladder, which makes the woman feel as if she needs to urinate more frequently.
When any of these symptoms appear, a woman should see her doctor for an exam. Symptoms such as these can also indicate a tumor and it would be important to diagnose cancer as early as possible.

When an Ovarian Cyst Ruptures
Ovarian cysts can sometimes get twisted or rupture and cause heavier symptoms. A rupture is actually dangerous and symptoms should be watched for carefully and medical assistance obtained immediately if they appear. The symptoms of a ruptured ovarian cyst include:
• Severe and sudden pain in the abdomen or pelvis
• Fever or vomiting along with the pain
• Cold, clammy skin
• Rapid breathing
• Lightheadedness
The last three are signs of shock and indicate a medical emergency. To be safe, the earlier any adverse symptoms can be addressed the better. In this way, rupture of an ovarian cyst can be avoided.
