Contraceptive Implants and IUDs
The medical community urges teens and older adults to use intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants to avoid unwanted pregnancy. The reason more women turn to these methods of birth control does not only stem from their doctor’s recommendations. These methods of birth control have shown to be effective in preventing pregnancy. It has been estimated that failure rate is the lowest for these devices. However, side effects can make these methods less than desirable.

The IUD (Intrauterine Device)
The IUD is a small plastic device which is shaped like a “T.” It is inserted into the uterus and used for a number of years without further concern. One type releases hormones into the system and one releases copper which acts as a spermicide. The IUD is expensive to get placed during an in-office visit, but some opt for this as opposed to trying to remember to take birth control pills.
Hormonal Implants as Birth Control
A hormonal implant is a very small rod (or a number of tiny rods) made of plastic that is placed under the skin in the upper arm. The device releases hormones into the system like the IUD. The implant lasts from three to five years without further concern. Hormonal implants are also expensive, costing hundreds of dollars to have them implanted.

Controversy Surrounding Implants and IUDs
Any of these long-acting reversible contraceptives can cause difficulties. There are many stories of women having side effects and adverse consequences from using devices that pump hormones into the system. The body’s natural hormone functions are interrupted and this is not necessarily a positive thing when it comes to the reproductive system or other parts of the body.

Although these birth control methods are reported to be very effective, these are some of the possible side effects:
• Gaining weight – A woman’s metabolism is shifted and can create weight gain with hormonal birth control.
• Having headaches – Some women have headaches when they are receiving doses of progesterone and estrogen. A migraine with an accompanying aura means a woman should immediately contact her healthcare provider.
• Mood swings – Hormones are known to affect mood. Commonly, when starting a hormonal method of birth control, a woman will have some fairly severe mood swings that reportedly subside after a few months.
• Nausea and/or vomiting – Hormonal shifts in the body can often cause nausea and in some cases vomiting. These symptoms have been reported to subside after a couple of months.
• Decreased libido – Sexual desire can decrease or disappear. If this is the case, the woman should explore other birth control options.
• Blood clots, heart attacks and stroke – Cardiovascular problems can come about because a change in reproductive hormones can have a negative effect on blood vessels and fat in the blood.
