Five Different Intrauterine Devices Available in the United States
In the United States, the FDA has approved five different IUD devices. Most devices use hormones to prevent pregnancy and can be effective for over 3 years at a time. Here is a quick description of each product available:

Pargard
Paragrad was the first IUD and has been available since 1988. It is effective for up to 10 years after it has been inserted and it is the only copper IUD on the market. It is a T-shaped device that features a shaft that is wrapped in copper wire. Paragard prevents the sperm from reaching the egg and creates a hostile uterine environment that makes it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the walls of the uterus. Once the device is inserted, it begins to work immediately, which makes it useful as both an emergency and a long-term contraceptive.

Mirena
Mirena was the first hormonal IUD and became available in 2001. It is not FDA approved for women who have not had children although it is still prescribed to all women. Mirena is effective for up to 5 years and is also used to treat patients with heavy menstrual bleeding.

Skyla
Skyla is produced by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, the same manufacturer as Mirena. It is a smaller device, which makes it a better choice for women who have not had children. This IUD is only effective for 3 years and releases a low level of hormones.

Liletta
The FDA approved Liletta in 2015. This IUD was created by Actavis and Medicines 360, which is a non-profit pharmaceutical company that focuses on women’s health. Liletta was developed as a low cost alternative that could be dispensed at public health clinics that participate in the 340B Drug Pricing Program. This program works to provide clinics that serve low-income patients with affordable pharmaceuticals. Liletta is the smallest IUD that uses the hormone progestin and it can last from 3-6 years.

Kyleena
Kyleena is the most recent IUD to be approved by the FDA. It started being prescribed in 2016. This IUD includes lower hormone levels that Mirena. In some cases, it is used after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.

IUDs are 99% effective in preventing pregnancy although these devices can come with complications. Many women experience severe pain during the insertion process and it is possible for the device to become dislodged over time.
