Preventing Ectopic Pregnancy
Although most of the forms of ectopic pregnancy cannot be prevented, there are things a woman can do to avoid this condition and reduce risks. It is important to know what risks may be present and to know some of the ways to keep safe from conditions that can damage the reproductive organs. Additionally, serious complications stemming from ectopic pregnancy can be averted by early diagnosis.

Safe Sex Practices can Prevent Ectopic Pregnancy
By engaging in safe sex practices, a woman can avoid contracting sexually transmitted infections and prevent pelvic inflammatory disease, so destructive to the female organs. Using a condom (either a male or female condom) each time the sexual act is performed will protect a woman from these conditions.
Sexually transmitted diseases can lead to a serious illness called pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). When a woman gets PID, the fallopian tubes can become scarred, which prevents the fertilized egg from continuing on into the uterus. The sexually transmitted diseases which are particularly dangerous are gonorrhea and chlamydia. Chronic inflammation of the fallopian tubes and the uterus can result, leading to scar tissue forming and adhesion of tissues. Having sex with many partners also increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections.

Lowering the Risk of Ectopic Pregnancy
There are a number of ways a woman can lower her risk for an occurrence of ectopic pregnancy. For instance, having tubal sterilization done is known to increase the chances of tubal pregnancy. This usually occurs two or more years after the operation. Of those who become pregnant after an unsuccessful tubal ligation, 50 percent of those are ectopic pregnancies. Avoiding this type of birth control will reduce a woman’s risk.
The reversal of tubal ligation also poses a risk for ectopic pregnancy. When the fallopian tubes are sewn back together in the reversal process, scar tissue can result. This can block the fallopian tubes or cause them to narrow. The fertilized egg cannot move smoothly through the tubes to the uterus and can become lodged in the fallopian tube.

A low progesterone level has been shown by studies to have an association with ectopic pregnancy. To balance levels of this hormone, a woman could look into using progesterone cream. Additionally, using fertility medications can lead to higher risks of ectopic pregnancy.
Of course, many adverse conditions can be prevented by early diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and pelvic inflammatory disease.
Additional Risks for Ectopic Pregnancy
Some of the additional risks for an ectopic pregnancy are:
• Women over the age of thirty-five
• In vitro fertilization
• Becoming pregnant when having an IUD
• Those who have had cesarean sections
• Those who have had surgery in the abdominal area
