Signs and Symptoms of Uterine Puncture
Uterine puncture is when some surgical instrument or a medical device placed in the uterus perforates the uterine wall. Many women now choose intrauterine devices as a birth control method, but IUDs present a risk of uterine puncture. Other causes include D&C procedures, use of forceps during childbirth and procedures used during induced childbirth. If the uterus has been punctured, it is vital to know the signs and symptoms so medical care can be obtained. Uterine perforation can be a life-threatening event.

The Most Common Signs and Symptoms of Uterine Puncture
When the uterus is perforated, a woman may experience stomach pain, nausea or vomiting. She may have cramping and notice irregular menstrual cycles or even stop menstruating. Some women have a decreased sex drive. They may develop skin problems, such as acne. They may have mood swings or depression or become more nervous. Other signs or symptoms may be:
• Weight gain
• Loss of hair
• Headaches
• Back pain
• Breast tenderness
• Fever
• Ovarian cysts

There are other more serious side effects that can come about due to perforation of the uterus. The woman may have an allergic reaction to an IUD and this would create swelling in the mouth, dizziness, unexplained shortness of breath, a rash on the skin or vaginal pain. Other serious side effects and indications that an IUD has perforated the uterus include:
• Foul-smelling discharge
• Vision changes
• Severe abdominal pain
• High blood pressure
• Numbness in a limb or limbs
• Genital sores
• Breast lumps
Sometimes an IUD can move from its original position, perforate the uterus and then move outside the uterus, puncturing the bowel, bladder or blood vessels. This can cause bleeding or even a system-wide infection known as sepsis.
When the uterus is punctured, it is possible that the IUD would no longer protect the wearer from becoming pregnant. When this is the case, any pregnancy with a perforated uterus is very dangerous. The perforated uterus also can create the risk of permanent infertility.

Treatment for Perforated Uterus
When the uterus is punctured, a woman will often need emergency surgery to repair the uterus. The surgery itself is full of risks, including scarring preventing further childbearing.
When a woman has been using an intrauterine device, the first thing a doctor will do is a pelvic X-ray, particularly if the IUD cannot be located by conventional methods (by feeling the string). The doctor will also likely do other diagnostic tests to confirm the condition of the uterus. The IUD will need to be removed, of course.
Because the side effects to uterus perforation can be life-threatening, a woman should know what to look for. It should be taken seriously when a woman has any of the signs or symptoms above. She should contact her doctor and a thorough physical exam needs to be done to determine if a perforation of the uterus has occurred.
