Five Safety Tips for Effectively Using an IUD
Today’s IUDs are much safer than those from a few decades ago, but there are still things you should know before using this device to prevent pregnancy. If used properly, IUDs are one of the most effective methods of birth control. However, there are still safety concerns and some users suffer from side effects. If you are considering an IUD for your birth control method, here are five things you should know:

IUDs use chemicals as their active ingredient. Some use copper and some use hormones, but there is always something being released into your body, no matter which type of device you choose. If you have a copper allergy, you will not be able to use the copper IUD. If you have issues with hormonal imbalance, this type of IUD might not work for you.
IUDs are not safe for people with an artificial heart valve. If you have undergone cardiovascular surgery or you have any other unusual health issues, make sure your doctor knows before inserting your IUD. Most of the time the IUD will not cause a problem, but it is always better to err on the side of caution and let your doctor know as much as possible about your health history.

IUDs cannot be used by anyone with a reproductive cancer. If you have been diagnosed with endometrial, cervical, or ovarian cancer and you will be or you are in the process of undergoing treatment, you are not eligible for IUD use. However, there is some evidence that using an IUD decreases your risk for developing these types of cancer. If you have an increased risk for reproductive cancers, speak with your doctor about the benefits of choosing an IUD as your birth control method.

IUDs need to be checked periodically. One of the best benefits of choosing an IUD is the lack of effort the device requires from the user. There is very little chance of user error, but most unintended pregnancies occur because the IUD has expelled and the user did not realize it. If you choose this method of birth control, speak with your doctor about the proper way to check it and ensure it is still in place and effectively preventing pregnancy. Though rare, it is possible to become pregnant while using an IUD and you will need to be especially cautious if this occurs.
IUDs can cause infection, but it occurs indirectly. There are numerous reports of women with IUDs developing pelvic infections, but this is typically due to the insertion process or another occurrence. They relate it to their IUD use, but there is no scientific evidence confirming that IUD use leads to infection.
