Causes and Risks for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

The more a person knows about a subject, the better she can deal with it. This holds true for pelvic inflammatory disease. This is also called PID and is an inflammation of the reproductive organs in females. Bacteria enter the uterus and can spread to the other organs such as the fallopian tubes, the ovaries and the cervix. PID can have serious consequences on the quality of life of a woman. It is good to know the risks and causes of the disease so it can be diagnosed rapidly and treated.

Risk Factors for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Some women are more likely to get PID and the risk factors are:

•    Under 25 years old and sexually active
•    Multiple sexual partners or a partner who has more than one sexual partner
•    Has had a sexually transmitted infection before
•    Douching regularly
•    Having an IUD (intrauterine device) inserted
•    Unprotected sex

Causes of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Pelvic inflammatory disease comes about by bacteria entering the vagina then spreading into the cervix and uterus and finally into other internal reproductive organs. Normally the cervix can prevent bacteria from moving into the uterus, but when the cervix becomes infected with a sexually transmitted disease or bad bacteria, it can no longer protect the rest of the organs. Disease-causing organisms can move to the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries.

Bacteria can infect the cervix or uterus from gonorrhea and chlamydia organisms invading the vagina during sexual intercourse. It is estimated that 90% of all pelvic inflammatory disease is caused by these organisms. Some of the other causes include childbirth, abortion and pelvic procedures, such as the insertion of an IUD.

Unprotected sex can increase the chances of getting a sexually transmitted infection, thus it is important for a woman to ensure her partner uses a condom or that she uses a female condom. Although wearing an IUD may increase the risk of PID, also using a condom during the sex act will help reduce the risk.

Preventing PID

Pelvic inflammatory disease can be prevented. A woman can avoid having multiple sexual partners and use the barrier methods of birth control (condoms, diaphragms) as well as the use of spermicides. Having one sexual partner who has been tested and is known not to have any sexually transmitted diseases is another way to prevent getting PID. If a woman is sexually active and is under 25 years of age, she should get regular screening for chlamydial infections.

Early treatment can prevent pelvic inflammatory disease from invading, with the drastic consequences so common with this condition. If a woman has any adverse symptoms such as pelvic pain, unusual vaginal discharge or bleeding in between her periods, she should get checked by a doctor.
