Ovarian Cysts and IUDs
Ovarian cysts, although not normally painful and creating no terribly severe side effects, are not a natural thing for the body to have within it. Many go away on their own, while others remain and must be checked by a doctor to ensure they don’t get bigger. When an ovarian cyst is too large, it can press against other pelvic organs and cause more pain. Of course, any cyst must be examined to ensure it is not a cancerous tumor. Wearing a hormonal IUD could increase a woman’s chances of getting an ovarian cyst.

How Hormonal IUDs Work
The only hormonal IUD for sale in the United States as of this writing is the Mirena IUS (intrauterine system) which has multiple ways of operating. It releases a synthetic hormone and is thought to also stop sperm from reaching the egg and, when that fails, to prevent the fertilized egg from becoming implanted in the uterine wall. In truth, doctors do not completely understand how the device works.
Hormonal IUDs and Cysts
Unfortunately, hormonal intrauterine devices are known to cause ovarian cysts in some cases. These benign growths could be an indirect result of the hormones released from the IUD. Any cyst requires monitoring, as it can grow and cause other problems. Although many just simply disappear without any treatment, sometimes cysts can have uncomfortable symptoms. Some of these symptoms are:

• Tenderness of the breasts
• Irregularity with menstrual periods
• Bloating in abdomen
• Pain in lower abdomen
Other Risks of the Hormonal Intrauterine Devices
General hormonal side effects from an IUD can also include headaches, acne, mood swings and breast tenderness. Some women may become pregnant when using a hormonal IUD as no device is 100 percent effective. When pregnancy occurs, a woman could get an infection in the uterus which could harm the baby. When the IUD is removed while the woman is pregnant, a miscarriage could result. If the IUD is not taken out, the baby could have birth defects or health problems stemming from the synthetic hormones being released in the uterus.
There are other risks such as:
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Puncture of the uterus
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Sexually transmitted diseases (unless condoms are used in conjunction with an IUD)
• Abscesses
• Infertility
Ovarian cysts may be the least dangerous aspect of an intrauterine device, but the condition still bears watching so further complications do not arise. All the risks put together of a hormonal IUD can be enough to discourage a woman from having this as her first choice of birth control methods.
