The ParaGard IUD is a popular contraception choice for its high reliability and the long-lasting protection it provides once inserted. But it’s not for everyone. A variety of contraindications—or circumstances that indicate it should not be used—exist for the ParaGard IUD.

The ParaGard is a T-shaped plastic device coiled with copper. The presence of copper helps make the uterus hostile to sperm, so they die before fertilizing an egg. Because of this, though, anyone with an allergy to copper should avoid it.

Currently being pregnant is a contraindication for all IUDs, as objects can’t be inserted in the uterus while a fetus is growing.

Another important warning sign is the presence of an active pelvic infection or sexually transmitted infection, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea. Because IUDs are inserted up through the cervix, there’s a slight possibility for them to transfer germs from the vagina into the uterus. A uterine infection can cause pain, fever, nausea and other symptoms, and in severe cases may lead to abscessing or scar tissue. STIs in particular are risk factors for pelvic infection. If your health caregiver discovers that you have an active infection, they’ll treat it and confirm it has cleared up before inserting an IUD.

Another contraindication is abnormalities of the uterus resulting in distortion of the uterine cavity. The ParaGard is made to fit into a uterus that’s within the typical range of shapes and sizes. If it isn’t a correct fit, it could dig into part of the tissue once inserted. In time, this could result in the IUD migrating through the tissue and perforating the uterus.

Diseases and disorders of the uterus, such as a cervical malignancy (cancerous mass) or bleeding of unknown cause, are also signs that it’s not safe to insert an object.

A rare condition, Wilson’s Disease, is related to the copper material used in the device. Wilson’s disease is a genetic disorder that causes excess copper to build up in the body instead of being excreted; it causes a range of symptoms such as vomiting or yellowing skin. Anything that increases the presence of copper in the body is thus harmful.

Along with medical contraindications that might cause a caregiver to determine you’re not a good candidate, there are also personal reasons a patient might decide the ParaGard isn’t the right choice. One of its most common symptoms is an increase in menstrual pain and cramping; for those who already have heavy periods or simply can’t stomach the thought of making them worse, the ParaGard may be worth ruling out.

IUDs don’t protect against STDs. Those who need such protection shouldn’t rely on the Paragard as their primary form of protection, although there’s nothing wrong with using both condoms and an IUD for added pregnancy protection.

A once-common belief, that women who have not had children should not get IUDs, is now being rejected by caregivers and patients. The ParaGard and other IUDs are safe regardless of age or number of pregnancies (including 0) one has had.

No medical device is without some risks and downside. In rare cases, the ParaGard can have serious side effects including embedding in and perforating the uterine lining. Patients should find out all the facts about their chosen method and ask their doctor about any concerns.
