Who Invented the IUD?

IUD use has been on the rise in the past couple decades. Their popularity is largely to do with the fact that it is so easy to put into place. Women have to do very little to ensure the device is still working. An IUD is also a very safe birth control method option that women can use to ensure they will not get pregnant until they are ready if it is used properly.

Did you know that IUDs have been used for nearly a hundred years? That’s amazing isn’t it? Intrauterine devices began their use in the early 1900s but did not gain popularity until much later as a widely used form of birth control. Let’s take a look at the history of the IUD and who invented them as well as where they are now in developing new forms.

The First IUDs

In Germany, a physician named Dr. Richter created the first IUD that was made from silkworm gut. This IUD was not widely used, however. Later, another physician from Germany named Dr. Ernst Grafenberg created a ring shaped IUD which had silver filaments. During the Nazi regime, contraception was considered to be a sort of threat to Aryan women and so his work was suppressed during that time.

Later, he moved to America where he worked with doctors H. Hall and M. Stone. They took over his work after he passed away and developed a ring made from stainless steel. During this time, a doctor from Japan named Tenrei Ota created an IUD ring from silver or gold.

Becoming More Popular

After the initial IUDs were developed, doctors began seeing which ones were the most effective and the most comfortable for the users. In the late 1950s, doctors began using thermoplastics which can bend when they are inserted and then regain their shape once they have been placed. Dr. Jack Lippes helped increase the use of IUDs in the late 1950s and also added the monofilament string to the IUD for ease of removal and comfort to the user. His was shaped like a loop and was named the Lippes Loop IUD.

Over time, more doctors developed their own versions. Some were successful and others were not. The Dalkon Shield was an example of one that failed since it caused many users to develop serious infections in the uterus. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that IUDs began to take the shape of an uppercase T that better fit the shape of the uterus to better increase its effectiveness.

IUDs Today

Today, most IUD devices are still the T shape or a modification of this shape. Hormonal forms of the IUD began to be used in the 1960s and 1970s and are still used today. Two of the most popular IUDs are the ParaGard (copper) and the Mirena (hormonal). Just in 2013, Mirena released a new lower dose hormonal IUD that lasts 3 years. Birth control options are always changing and evolving to best fit the needs of women and men today.
