Negative Side Effects from Using an IUD

While the IUD is one of the most effective forms of birth control available today it is not without side effects. As with all forms of birth control there are both negative and positive side effects that you can potentially experience. Not everyone will experience all of these side effects and some women will not notice any negative side effects at all.

There are two variations of IUDs, one of which relies on hormones and one that does not. You will find that there are certain side effects that can occur with the use of either type of IUD and some that are exclusive to each specific type of IUD.

Hormonal IUD
Potential negative side effects associated with use of the hormonal IUD are similar to ones suffered from other forms of hormonal birth control. Some women who are affected by other forms of birth control do not notice side effects from the IUD due to the fact that the hormones are localized to the uterus, rather than throughout the whole body. Some possible side effects are:

Serious Side Effects
Although rare, some women do experience serious side effects from using the IUD. Sometimes this indicates an allergic reaction. If you experience any of the following side effects from either IUD, contact your physician immediately:

•    Dizziness
•    Chills
•    Genital sores
•    Breathing difficulties
•    Fever
•    Skin rash
•    Breast lumps
•    Changes in vision
•    Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes and skin)
•    Severe abdominal pain
•    Foul smelling vaginal discharge
•    Increase in blood pressure
•    Numbness in limbs

While some of these side effects can make it difficult for women to keep using the IUD, often the side effects are mild. Your doctor can help you weigh the risks and benefits and if you suffer from any of the side effects you should discuss them with your doctor to determine if continuing the IUD is right for you.
