Does Using an IUD Affect Your Chances of Having an Ectopic Pregnancy?
Before we can understand the risks between IUDs and ectopic pregnancies, it is important to determine what each one is and what role they play with each other.  There are a few different types of IUDs and this is important when considering ectopic pregnancies.

IUDs
An IUD, intrauterine device, is used as a common form of contraceptive across the world.  It is a T-shaped rod that is inserted into the cervix that damages the sperm to keep them from reaching the egg for fertilization.  An IUD could be a copper type IUD that releases copper ions into the blood stream and damages the sperm while building up white blood cells in the vagina.  IUDs can also release hormones into the body, which can damage or kill the sperm.  Some hormonal IUDs release estrogen while others release progesterone.

Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic pregnancy is simply when an egg attaches itself to another organ or lining of the fallopian tubes after fertilization instead of in the uterus.  This can be life threatening to the woman, as the embryo could continue to grow in the wrong organ and eventually burst that organ.  Ectopic pregnancies can be found in women with IUD use and in women without IUDs.

Similarities between IUDs and Ectopic Pregnancies
The CDC, through a study over many decades, has significantly tested the relationship between IUDs and ectopic pregnancies.  While copper IUDs have shown no increase in ectopic pregnancy over non-contraceptive users, some hormonal IUDs have been associated with an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy.  This has been limited to progesterone IUDs but for reasons that are unknown.  It could be that the hormones that make it harder for the sperm to reach the egg, also make it harder for the egg to travel into the uterus if a pregnancy does occur.
It is important to remember that having a pregnancy while using an IUD is very rare.  IUDs have an above 99 percent effectiveness against fertilization of the egg.  This does not mean that pregnancies with an IUD in place have not happened, but that IUDs are just as susceptible to any other form of hormonal birth control.  If you have an IUD and you have become pregnant, it is extremely important for you to seek out medical help from your doctor.  It is imperative that an ectopic pregnancy is caught as early as possible so that it can be dealt with in the least invasive measures.
