Ectopic pregnancy is a condition that requires fast action from a doctor. The reason an ectopic pregnancy is so dangerous is that the growing fertilized egg, when lodged in a fallopian tube, can rupture the tube and cause internal bleeding. This can be a life-threatening situation and should be addressed immediately.

Diagnosing an Ectopic Pregnancy

Any woman who reports to her doctor with vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain should be suspected of having an ectopic pregnancy. It would need to be one of the first things explored upon physical exam. A pregnancy test would be done as well as a pelvic exam. An ultrasound test will provide the doctor a view of the uterus and fallopian tubes. The ultrasound may show a gestational sac within the tube and that is clear evidence of a tubal pregnancy.

Other tests may be done. An abnormal rise in one element in the blood (hCG) can indicate an ectopic pregnancy. When this blood test is not certain, it can be run again a few days later. The doctor may also do a laparoscopy where he makes small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a laparoscope with a camera attachment. In this way he can see the reproductive organs and hopefully confirm or disregard an ectopic pregnancy.

Treatment of an Ectopic Pregnancy

When an ectopic pregnancy is confirmed, treatment must begin. Amazingly enough, sometimes an ectopic pregnancy will resolve all by itself. However this only occurs in about one half of these types of pregnancies, and leaving it to chance could be dangerous. There is a medicine the doctor can give that may reduce the need for a surgical procedure by stopping the growth of the pregnancy tissue. This is called methotrexate treatment. If there is a danger of the fallopian tube rupturing, however, the doctor will likely opt for surgery (laparoscopy).

Laparoscopic surgery sometimes is all that is needed to remove the misplaced tissue and repair the fallopian tube. There are only tiny incisions made and recovery time is relatively rapid.

When the fallopian tube ruptures, the woman will need emergency surgery to stop the hemorrhaging. When this occurs, there is also a chance the surgeon will have to remove the fallopian tube and the ovary. He will do so if they are damaged.
