What is Pelvic Inflammatory Disease?

Pelvic inflammatory disease is a woman’s disease, a serious infection that affects the female reproductive organs. Irreversible damage to these organs is possible and it can result in infertility. This disease is also referred to as PID. Every year more than one million women experience PID in some form, with over 100,000 women becoming infertile. Of the 100,000 tubal pregnancies that occur each year, a large proportion of these are linked in some way to pelvic inflammatory disease.

Areas of Infection with Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

Infection spreads through the female genital tract when a woman has pelvic inflammatory disease. The reproductive organs that can be affected are:

•    Uterus
•    Cervix
•    Fallopian tubes
•    Ovaries

As the inflammation spreads, it leads to scar tissue forming which damages the function of these organs.

How Sexually Transmitted Diseases Can Cause PID

When women have sexual intercourse, bacteria can be introduced into the vagina and travel up into the uterus. This is how an infection can start. As the bacteria enter the body, they attach to other cells and begin to multiply. They overcome the natural defenses of the body and continue to grow and spread. This is how the inflammation spreads. Moving throughout the reproductive organs, the infection takes over and creates pain, discharge and other symptoms.

In addition to sexually transmitted diseases, sometimes when an IUD is inserted into the uterus, bacteria also enters and this opens the door for PID to become an issue.

Signs, Symptoms and Treatment of PID

There are many women who have pelvic inflammatory disease who do not have any signs or symptoms. It may only be detected in the later stages when pain becomes evident. However, the following are some of the symptoms noted for PID to watch for:

•    Tenderness in the lower abdomen
•    Pain in the upper right of the abdomen
•    Yellow or green vaginal discharge with foul odor
•    Painful urination
•    Fever or chills
•    Nausea
•    Vomiting
•    Pain during sex

A woman should see her doctor whenever she has any of the above symptoms so PID can be diagnosed rapidly if it is a situation. The sooner it is treated, the better. The doctor will first do a pelvic exam and he may do blood tests and tests of secretions from the vagina or cervix. If there are indications that the disease is in the body, he may want to do a minor surgery. This is called a laparoscopy where an instrument is placed through a small incision in the navel area. The instrument used is a lighted tube which allows the doctor to see the reproductive organs.

If PID is the diagnosis, the doctor may prescribe antibiotics and/or bed rest. If the case is developed, the doctor may need to do surgery to repair or remove certain reproductive organs.
