Does IUD Use Reduce Your Risk for Cervical Cancer?
There is a lot of negative information available concerning IUDs. Though medical research shows that IUDs are safe for most users, many women have stories about side effects and other problems caused by their IUDs. Before choosing to use an IUD as your preferred method of birth control, make sure you have done plenty of research and discussed your specific risks with your doctor. Despite the negative aspects that many have encountered using IUDs, there is medical evidence that using this type of birth control can reduce your risk for cancer.

New Research
In the past, many people believed that IUDs increased a woman’s risk for cancer. The latest research shows this may not be true. A study conducted recently in Spain followed IUD users for a decade and found these women had half the risk of developing cervical cancer as women who never used IUDs. It did not matter how long the IUD was in place, users had a decreased risk.

Connection to HPV
Other studies have shown there may be a reduced risk for endometrial cancer for IUD users. Researchers believe there is a connection between the IUD lowering the risk for the human papilloma virus (HPV) and the decrease in cervical cancer risk. It is believed that HPV is a precursor for cervical cancer. Though no evidence exists showing that IUDs reduce the risk for HPV, the study did show that IUD use lowered the chances that HPV would develop into cancer.

The specific reasons for the decrease in risk are unknown, but researchers speculate that the insertion and removal process may play a role. This would account for the similar results among users regardless how long their IUD was in place. Researchers believe the process of inserting and removing may destroy precancerous lesions. Another theory is that the IUD may trigger an immune response that prevents HPV from developing into cancer. Since IUD use is believed to prevent pregnancy by attracting white blood cells to the reproductive organs, this latter theory could eventually prove true.
IUDs are one of the world’s most popular forms of birth control, but there are still many women who are concerned about the risks. This is due in part to problems with a specific brand of IUD several years ago, but it is also because there is anecdotal evidence that IUDs can cause health problems. If you would like to learn more about your options for IUD use, speak with your doctor.
