IUDs, a long-lasting method of birth control that takes the form of a small plastic or metal device placed in the uterus, are known for their low failure rate. But although most who choose this method can expect to avoid unwanted pregnancy and other complications, there are some potentially serious complications, among which is te IUD embedding in the uterus.
In normal cases, the IUD stays where it is placed by a gynecologist, sitting in the upper part of the uterus with only the strings protruding into the vagina. In some cases, it can be expelled out the cervix, either partially or totally. In others, it embeds in the uterine wall.

This happens when an edge of the t-shaped IUD begins to poke into the uterine wall, causing it to be stuck. This may not cause any pain or be noticeable until it’s time for a doctor to remove the IUD. They can usually be pulled out with relatively little pressure, but if they are stuck, they may not budge, and the doctor may need to do an ultrasound or other procedure to find out its location and where it is stuck, then use a clamp to pull it out. Until removal, an IUD that is partially wedged in the uterine wall may work fine as birth control.
In more extreme cases, the IUD keeps migrating through the uterine wall until it pierces through, fully perforating it and even travelling into the intestines or other part of the body. This condition may cause pain, and once the IUD leaves the uterus, the patient is no longer protected from pregnancy. The patient may also be alerted that something is wrong due to irregular bleeding or because the IUD’s string disappears.

Other potential symptoms of a perforated uterus include nausea and vomiting dizziness, fever and abdominal swelling.
In these cases it is necessary to do an X-ray to find the IUD, then surgically remove it. Surgeons may also have to repair any tissue damage. In some cases, multiple surgeries have been needed. Scarring may develop in body tissue, resulting in long-lasting complications. And damage to the uterus and cervix can affect the patient’s fertility and prevent future pregnancies.
This may also increase the chance of ectopic pregnancy, a condition in which a fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube. If the embryo continues growing, this can cause a rupture, leading to life-threatening complications.

While outcomes like these are rare, patients need to be aware of the risk so they can make an informed decision. Many victims of embedded or perforated IUD have sued the makers of the devices (Bayer, the makers of Mirena, and Teva, until 2018 the makers of Paragard). Those who have sued have accused Bayer of selling a deceptive product and of concealing the risks. In some cases, the drug maker has settled with victims of organ perforation.
Organ perforation is a serious condition, and an IUD that wanders through the abdomen can damage the bladder, kidneys, intestines or other organs.
