What Materials Are Used in IUDs?

The Intrauterine Device, or the IUD, is a small, flexible T-shaped contraceptive implant that is place in the uterus through the vagina. There are two kinds of IUD that are both approximately 1 1/4 wide and 1 1/2 inches long, not including the string that extends from the bottom of the T and hangs through the cervix. This string is used to check that the IUD is still in place and also for removal by a physician.

Copper IUD
The T of the Copper IUD is made of flexible, polyethylene plastic. A portion of each arm of the T as well as the base is wrapped in copper. Attached to the bottom is a plastic string. The copper triggers the fallopian tubes and the uterus to create a fluid that is toxic to sperm to prevent pregnancy without the use of hormones.

This type of IUD is a good long term contraceptive choice for women who may be seeking a hormone free option. This can include those who have reactions to hormonal birth control as well as breastfeeding mothers. If you have a copper allergy, which is very rare, your physician will not give you this type of IUD.

Hormonal IUD
The Hormonal IUD is made up of a plastic T-shaped frame. The base of the T contains a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone, know as progestin, and is covered in silicone. The plastic also contains barium sulfate, making it radiopaque, which means it will show up on an X-ray or under another form of radiation. The string is also made of polyethylene plastic.

The hormones in this IUD can have added benefit beyond contraception and therefore can be a good option for women seeking pregnancy prevention along with reduced menstrual bleeding and cramping.

What is Polyethylene?
The T-shaped base of both types of IUD is made of polyethylene plastic. Polyethylene is a petroleum-based plastic that was discovered in 1933. There are two forms, Low Density (LDPE) and High Density (HDPE). LDPE is utilized in film-type plastics, sandwich baggies and grocery bags. HDPE is used in more sturdy items such as chairs, boxes and folding tables.

Both types of IUDs have similar size, shape and base materials. Each then has its own unique ingredients that make it work. You can discuss with your physician which type would best suit you.
