How Effective are IUDs?

An IUD is a T-shaped contraceptive device made of pliable plastic that is used for pregnancy prevention. It is similar in size to a quarter. There are two kinds of IUD: copper and hormonal. They work in similar ways to prevent pregnancy, with the hormonal IUD working in a few additional ways. For this reason, the hormonal IUD is slightly more effective.

The copper device causes the fallopian tubes and uterus to create a fluid that kills sperm. Similarly, the hormones released by the hormonal IUD damage and kill sperm. In addition, the hormones also cause the cervical mucus to become sticky and thick, preventing sperm from entering the uterus. Finally, it inhibits the growth of the uterine lining, making it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant. It is thought that the hormonal IUD may prevent ovulation as well.

Highly Effective
A study published in 2012 indicates that the IUD prevents pregnancy up to 20 times more effectively than the birth control pill, patch or ring. The IUD is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It shares the same effectiveness rate as permanent sterilization but is completely and easily reversible.

The copper IUD is effective immediately after being inserted with no need to wait or use other forms of protection temporarily. The hormonal IUD can take up to 14 days to become fully effective so a backup form of birth control is advised during that time. However, if you have the hormonal IUD inserted within the first 7 days following your menstrual period it is effective immediately.

Because the IUD is a removable device, in order for it to be most effective it is important to check it monthly to ensure it has not slipped out of place or been expelled from the uterus.

Emergency Contraception
The copper IUD may also be used as emergency contraception after unprotected sex. When inserted up to 5 days after intercourse the copper IUD reduces the risk of pregnancy to 1 in 1,000.5, which is more effective than other types of emergency contraception. This is not an option to be used repeatedly as emergency contraception but for women who plan to keep the IUD in place going forward.

How effective any form of birth control is can depend on many factors, including health history, lifestyle and medications being taken. Your physician can discuss your personal information and your birth control options to see what types may be most effective for you.
