What is Ectopic Pregnancy?
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches anywhere outside of the uterus. It typically occurs in the fallopian tubes, but there have also been cases in which an egg attached in the cervix, ovaries, or abdominal cavity. Ectopic pregnancy is fairly common and may not be a serious medical problem, but complications associated with the event can lead to major health problems. Ectopic pregnancies can also be emotionally devastating, especially when they signify chronic reproductive problems.

The biggest health risk associated with ectopic pregnancy is internal bleeding. About five out of every 10,000 cases of ectopic pregnancy result in death, so it is rare for ectopic pregnancies to be fatal. In most tragic cases, the woman failed to seek medical attention, so death may have been preventable. Unfortunately, incidences of ectopic pregnancy are on the rise, partially due to the increase in fertilization treatments.
Diagnosing an Ectopic Pregnancy
The diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy requires a doctor’s examination. A pregnancy test is usually administered and a pelvic exam given. An ultrasound is also part of the diagnosis procedure. The results from these three evaluations establish the diagnosis. In most cases of ectopic pregnancy, the pregnancy test registers hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, but the ultrasound reveals only a mass of tissue outside of the uterus. Further testing may be required to make an official diagnosis. This usually involves laparoscopy, which is a process in which small incisions are made in the abdominal wall to view the pelvis and abdomen.

Diagnosing and treating an ectopic pregnancy is important because untreated, it can rupture and create serious health risks. It is possible for the body to absorb an ectopic pregnancy and no obvious symptoms or complications occur. However, there is no way to predict whether this will occur, so most doctors choose to err on the side of caution if the ectopic pregnancy is discovered.

Risks of Rupture
Ruptures create pain in the pelvic region and abdomen. There is usually internal bleeding, which can lead to shock. The bleeding is caused by the rupture of the fallopian tube or from the damage the pregnancy causes to the veins and arteries inside of the tube. If rupture has caused bleeding, emergency surgery will likely be required. Bleeding also causes scarring, which can damage the fallopian tubes permanently and create chronic fertility problems. Ectopic pregnancies are more likely to occur when there is scarring within the fallopian tubes.
