Insertion of an IUD
The flexible plastic intrauterine device (IUD) is a method of birth control popular among women. It is left in place for five to ten years with only doctor checkups needed regularly. Trouble-free birth control is a large plus with these devices. There are two different kinds of IUDs available in the U.S. and the insertion of both are very much the same.

Some women may have had their doctor instruct them to take some over-the-counter pain and anti-inflammatory medication before they arrive for IUD insertion. They are usually instructed to take some one hour before the appointment. The woman should follow whatever instructions her doctor provides. Just in case the doctor does not supply any, the patient should bring sanitary pads with her to the doctor’s office. There is usually some bleeding after the procedure.
Examination Prior to Insertion
The doctor may perform a pregnancy test before starting, just to ensure there is no developing baby in the womb. She can ask him any questions during this exam so she can become as relaxed as possible. The more relaxed she is, the better the insertion will go.

A physical exam may consist of the doctor inserting two fingers into the woman’s vagina while palpitating the abdomen. This is to feel the position and size of the pelvic organs and to identify any tenderness, which could mean an infection.
Insertion Process of an Intrauterine Device
The first step of the insertion process is to open the vagina. A special tool is used to do this where the walls can be separated. The vaginal area will be cleansed with a solution to make the environment sterile. In some cases, the physician may use a local anesthesia.

Another thin instrument will be inserted to hold the cervix and uterus steady and then another small instrument will be used to measure the cervical canal as well as the uterus. The IUD will be taken from its packaging and the arms bent back. A tube is used to insert it into the uterus. Once inside the arms open and keep the IUD in its correct position.
Some of the side effects a woman may experience during this procedure are:
• Cramping
• Pinching feelings
• Dizziness
• Some will have moderate to severe pain upon insertion
After Insertion of an IUD
Once the IUD is inside and all tools removed, the doctor will show the patient how to check that the string is hanging down properly in the vagina. If the doctor has not already told her, she should ask which type of IUD was used and when it should be replaced.
