Can You Remove an IUD Yourself?
Removing an IUD on your own can be a very dangerous and risky thing to do. There are reasons that an IUD is considered a medical device, particularly because it can be very tough to insert as well as to remove. There are a few complications that can arise from the removal of an IUD, especially if it is done outside of a sterile doctor’s office.

There are many specialized tools that are used during insertion and removal that are not available for self-use. There is also the risk of infection from not using sterile medical tools to remove your IUD even though the process may seem to be pretty easy. There are many factors to consider when contemplating performing a medical procedure that really should be performed by a doctor, in the physician’s office.

Possible Complications of Removing an IUD Yourself
One of the most important things your doctor does when removing your IUD is to locate the strings, and then to dilate the cervix so the IUD can be pulled out of the uterus without causing serious damage. If you cannot locate the two strings attached to the IUD, this does not necessarily mean anything has gone wrong, but rather that the strings may have slipped into the cervical canal. It can be unsafe for a woman to try and find the strings without the proper support or tools that a doctor’s office has. In some cases, a doctor will use a sonogram to determine if the IUD has retracted into the uterus. Although this is not a serious condition and is easily fixed by a doctor, it can be very dangerous for someone to try and find themselves.

Serious Complications of Removing an IUD Yourself
In rare cases, an IUD can become embedded in the uterine wall, causing a complication that results in the IUD becoming hard to remove. In your doctor’s office, the doctor can apply a light anesthetic to the area and safely remove the IUD from the uterine wall without causing any punctures or perforations. If this were to be done at home, the woman would not be able to tell that the IUD was embedded until she tried to pull it and met resistance, possibly tearing the uterine wall. Again, this is something that can be easily determined by your doctor but would likely result in injury in an attempted self-removal.
If you are considering removing your IUD on your own, please call and talk to your doctor about your options.
