Can IUDs Cause Infertility?
Women considering an IUD for birth control have a number of things to think about. In addition to the side affects of using either the copper or hormonal varieties of IUDs, there are also concerns about the insertion process. As if that were not enough, there are numerous stories about IUDs causing infertility.
Two 1985 studies showed plastic IUDs could cause infertility, which is partially the cause of so much current misinformation about the devices. The IUDs that were used in 1985 are not the same ones used today. The devices have become safer and more effective, but there is still cause for concern. This is why it is so important to conduct research and speak with your doctor before making a decision about an IUD or any other type of birth control.

Copper vs. Hormonal
There are two types of IUDs. Both are made from plastic, but each has a different active component. One type features a small amount of copper that is released into the body to impede pregnancy. The other type releases a hormone known as progestin, which also creates an unwelcoming environment for pregnancy.
Medical studies have confirmed that copper IUDs do not lead to infertility. They are considered a safe and effective method of birth control and do not impede fertility once removed from the body. There are side effects and injuries can occur during the insertion or removal process, but these are due primarily to natural causes or doctor error, not the IUD itself.

On the other hand, there is less medical evidence dispelling the link between infertility and the hormonal IUD. Though most doctors agree it is a safe form of birth control, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence showing the opposite to be true. Many women have reported problems conceiving after the removal of their hormonal IUD. Many also confirm the problems did not begin until their IUD was inserted. Since the IUD is recommended primarily for women who have given birth, it would be expected that a problem did not exist in the past.

Unfortunately, it is tough to tell if infertility is caused specifically by the device or by a secondary factor. For instance, some women develop an infection following the insertion of the IUD. This is caused by bacteria entering the uterus. If left untreated, pelvic inflammatory disease and other infections can lead to infertility. Though not caused directly by the device, the infertility is associated with IUD use.
