How is an IUD Removed?
An IUD is a birth control device that is placed in the uterus. There are two different types of IUDs. The hormonal variety is good for up to five years and the copper IUD lasts about a decade. It is possible to remove an IUD prior to its full life span, but it is recommended that women commit to long-term birth control before choosing an IUD. It can take awhile for your body to adjust to the device, so there is no sense in removing it after the adjustment period until you are ready to have children.

If the time has come to remove your IUD there are a few things you should know. You and your doctor can schedule the appointment based on your menstrual cycle. The removal procedure may be less uncomfortable just prior to or during ovulation.
Standard Removal
The removal process is similar to the process used to insert the IUD. Your doctor must remove your IUD, so do not attempt removal on your own. As long as the IUD is functional and in place, it is removed during a traditional pelvic exam. Small forceps are used to grasp the threads attached to the device. It takes only a few minutes for removal. However, there are times in which the IUD has been expelled and the removal process becomes more complicated.

Complications
Like the insertion process, there is a limited risk of perforation during removal. If perforation of the uterus occurs during removal, surgery may be necessary. This can also be the case if the IUD has been expelled, though surgery is not always necessary in this case.
Removal of an IUD is a fairly standard procedure in a gynecologist’s office. If you are considering an IUD or you have changed doctors since your IUD was inserted, speak with him or her about the removal process. You want to work with a doctor who has experience with removal. It is an easy process, but things can go wrong, so you want someone familiar with the process.

If you feel any pain during the removal or something does not feel right, speak up. Your doctor may be able to make an adjustment or alter the process to make it more comfortable. Pain or discomfort can also be a sign that something is wrong. If it occurs, your doctor needs to know so he or she can check for damage or other problems before completing the removal.
