What is an IUD?
An intrauterine device (IUD) is a method of birth control. It is made from a flexible piece of plastic or copper that is implanted in the uterus by a doctor. It is considered one of the most effective methods of birth control and it lasts a long time without requiring daily maintenance or any action prior to intercourse. It is the most popular form of reversible birth control in the world and many IUD users report being happy with the results.

Different IUDs
Two main brands of IUDs are used in the United States. The Mirena IUD is made from plastic. It provides continuous birth control for up to five years. It works by releasing small amounts of progestin into the body. The Mirena brand is intended for use by women who have previously given birth. It is also recommended for women who have no prior experience with ectopic pregnancy or pelvic inflammatory disease. In addition to preventing pregnancy, Mirena also claims its IUD is effective for reducing menstrual bleeding and cramps.

The other brand of IUD sold in the United States is the ParaGard IUD. It is made from flexible plastic and wrapped in a copper layer. This IUD features no hormones and releases copper into the uterus. It is effective for up to 10 years. Unlike the Mirena brand, it is not effective for reducing the amount of bleeding or cramps associated with menstruation. As a matter of fact, many women find their bleeding becomes heavier. The ParaGard IUD can be used as a form of emergency contraception because it lowers the risk of conception by more than 99% if inserted within five days of unprotected intercourse.

In addition to the release of hormones or copper, IUDs prevent pregnancy by interfering with the movement of sperm toward the egg and by changing the lining of a woman’s uterus. This change is intended to prevent the egg from attaching to the lining of the uterus, but research shows varying results for this process. The hormones released by the Mirena IUD can also prevent ovulation from occurring, so pregnancy is not possible.
Insertion
IUD insertion is performed by your doctor. The IUD features a T-shape that is bent into a tube shape for positioning. It is pushed into place with a removable applicator. Once in place, the arms open and it returns to its original T-shape inside of the uterus. IUD insertion is relatively painless, though some women experience pinching, cramping, and dizziness. If properly inserted and operating correctly, any side effects should ease within a few days.
