About the Company that Owns Paragard
Originally, Teva Pharmaceuticals manufactured Paragard. This company was founded in Jerusalem in 1901. The two founders were pharmacists who would import medications and sell them throughout the area. In the early days, they used mules and camels to travel and reach customers.
Eventually, patients started to demand local medicines and Teva decided to expand and address this new market. By 1985, Teva had grown significantly and began to enter the US markets through a series of acquisitions. It is still one of the 15 pharmaceutical companies, but in 2017, the company decided to sell the Paragard brand to CooperSurgical for $1.1 billion. The sale was made in order to divest non-core assets and work towards paying off $35 billion in debt.

CopperSurgical focuses on women’s healthcare and offers products in four major categories: surgical, practices and clinics, contraceptives and obstetrics. The company was founded in 1990 and one of their first products was the Frigitronics Cryosurgery probe which is used on cervical surgeries. While the company is headquartered in Trumbull, CT, they have locations throughout the US and the world.

Lawsuits Against CooperSurgical
Since purchasing Paragard, CooperSurgical has had to deal with warning letters from the FDA and a growing number of lawsuits. The FDA warned the company that their television ads and other promotional materials minimized the risks associated with Paragard. While the commercials did mention certain risks, the way the ads were designed made it difficult for viewers to digest this information.
In addition, lawsuits are claiming that the company hasn’t been transparent about how many women have required surgery after using Paragard and that doctors have not been properly instructed on how to remove the device. It is possible for Paragard to be expelled and/or embedded in the uterus. The risk of this happening is higher during the removal process. The IUD can break into pieces, which will then have to be surgically removed.

In some cases, an embedded or broken IUD can cause pelvic infections, organ damage and infertility. A full hysterectomy may be the only solution. And several surgeries may be needed to repair damage. Women who have experienced these extreme cases are looking to hold the manufacturer responsible and receive compensation for their medical costs and pain and suffering. Moving forward, CooperSurgical will be responsible for addressing these issues and may be forced to negotiate a settlement.
