Should You be Concerned about Your IUD?

An IUD is typically considered a very effective method of birth control, but there are a variety of reasons why an IUD might not be right for you. Unfortunately, you may not realize this until after the insertion process.

There are two types of IUDs: copper and hormonal. Both are made from plastic, but the copper IUD is covered in a thin layer of copper that is released into the uterus over time. The hormonal IUD releases the hormone progestin into the system to prevent pregnancy. This type of IUD can also be prescribed for women who experience heavy bleeding and cramping during their menstrual periods.

Common Problems with the IUD

Though side effects are considered rare, there is a great deal of anecdotal information concerning the hormonal IUD. The most serious risks associated with an IUD are perforation of the uterus during insertion and expulsion in the months following insertion. Expulsion is most common for women who have never or who have very recently given birth. Perforation is even rarer, but it obviously damages the body and results in a very unpleasant experience for the woman.

Once you have made it through the insertion process and determined that your body is not going to expel the IUD, hormonal IUD manufacturers would have you believe you are good to go. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Reports of Unexpected Side Effects

There are instances in which an IUD can cause an infection. If you have an IUD, no matter how many years it has been in use, you need to pay close attention to unusual symptoms. If you experience cramping, burning, abdominal pain, abnormal discharge, or spotting between periods speak with your doctor immediately. There are times when these things occur, but you need to know as soon as possible if there is a problem.

Some users have also reported hair loss in response to their hormonal IUD. Since hormones are being released into the body through a synthetic process, the body may not respond exactly as predicted. No woman can know for sure exactly how her body might respond. Some also experience typical symptoms associated with hormonal fluctuations, such as mood swings, trouble sleeping, and headaches.

Other symptoms that have been reported include nausea, dizziness, severe depression, skin rashes, visible water retention and other weight gain, low energy, high blood sugar, nervousness, skin rashes, diarrhea, hirsuitism, and the discharge of breast milk when not breast feeding. There have even been reports of women experiencing menopausal symptoms.

If you experience any symptoms, unexpected or surprising following the insertion of or during the life of your IUD, speak with your doctor immediately.
