IUDs and Abscesses
There are a number of concerns related to hormonal IUDs and one of the most common is uterine abscesses. Studies are currently underway to determine if the use of a hormonal IUD causes pelvic abscess formation.
Study Shows Potential Link
In one study, 62 women were evaluated for a connection between their IUDs and the formation of abscesses. The women in this study were monogamous Muslim women that had no other notable health issues. They ranged in age from 19 to 50 and were all current IUD users. Each of the women developed a pelvic mass and experienced abdominal pain that caused them to visit the doctor. They were initially given antibiotics to treat the problem. About half of them needed no additional treatment beyond the course of antibiotics. Twenty-four of the women required surgery that ranged in severity from drainage to hysterectomy.

The study concluded that further investigation is needed to assure the safety of the IUD in regard to abscesses. Though there is currently no reason to believe that pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or abscesses are a direct result of IUD use, this study would indicate otherwise. Generally, PID and abscesses related to IUDs are believed to be caused by pre-existing infections or problems with insertion, but this study could indicate a connection between the device itself and the development of abscesses.
Other studies have indicated there may be a connection between IUD-induced abscesses and other conditions. For instance, women with diabetes occasionally develop uterine abscesses. At this time, there is no way to tell for sure if the problem with abscess formation was caused by diabetes, the IUD, or a combination of the two.

In addition to abscesses, there is a variety of other side effects associated with the use of hormonal IUDs. Some are mild, but others develop into serious problems that can affect a person’s quality of life. These side effects include loss of menstrual periods during use, headaches, back aches, acne, dizziness, cramping, mood swings, depression, and bloating.

Not all of these symptoms have been scientifically linked to IUD use, but they are common among many users.
