Important Statistics for IUD Users
There is a great deal of misinformation about IUD use available. There is also a lot of information that may not be backed up by scientific studies, but is still important for women to know prior to choosing an IUD for birth control. It is important to separate what pertains to only one or two users from the information that is more likely to affect you. Some of the most important statistics to know about IUDs include:

• Less than 1% of women using IUDs become pregnant. When pregnancy does occur, it is almost always because the IUD has been expelled from the uterus. With regular checks, users know there is a problem and can postpone intercourse or use another method of birth control until the problem is fixed. You should contact your doctor immediately if you believe your IUD has shifted. Even with the occasional pregnancy, IUDs are still far more effective than other methods of birth control.
• Uterus puncture occurs in less than 1% of insertion procedures. Puncture can be painful, but it typically heals without incident. It is an indication that inserting an IUD into your body may be dangerous and your doctor will likely suggest another form of birth control.
• Less than 1% of women develop pelvic infections following the insertion of the IUD. This is believed to be caused by bacteria present during the insertion or a pre-existing STD, as opposed to the IUD itself.

• Between 1 and 7% of women experience a slippage or expelling of their IUD. This does not cause any medical damage, but it can result in pregnancy. The device is not able to move from the uterus to the abdomen, but it can drop into the vagina. This is why it is so important to periodically check the IUD when in use.
• IUDs cost anywhere from $150 to $500, including the device and the insertion process. This may seem pricier than other forms of birth control, but it is a one-time charge that lasts for at least five years. Some insurance plans cover this cost.

• IUDs can be used for emergency contraception. If you engage in unprotected sex, a copper IUD can be inserted within five days to prevent pregnancy. This is believed to prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus. This method of emergency contraception is considered nearly 100% effective.
If you believe the IUD might be the right method of birth control for you, speak with your doctor about your options.
